Höfundarrétarsambandið (The Copyright Alliance) sem eru samtök höfundarréttarhafa í Bandaríkjunum vilja harðari höfundaréttarlög. Helst vilja þau þannig höfundarréttarlög að allt sé gert refsivert í þessum málum. En í Höfundarréttarsamtökin eru með meðlimi eins og MPAA og RIAA innanborðs. Í þetta skiptið er núna verið að þrýsta á væntanlega forsetaframbjóðendur varðandi höfundarréttarlögin.

„The future of our creative output in the United States is at stake in the 2008 presidential election,“ the letter to the candidates says. „It is critical not only for members of the creative community but also for the US economy to ensure that copyrights are respected and piracy is reduced. We are asking you to let us know what you would do to help preserve one of America’s greatest strengths, its creative community.“
A questionnaire attached to the letter is written in a manner that reflects the Copyright Alliance’s agenda and is clearly intended to serve as an instrument of persuasion. The introduction to the questionnaire states that „the livelihood of the next generation, and America’s global competitiveness, will increasingly depend on the strong copyright protection that allows creativity to be rewarded.“
The questions include calls for stronger laws and stricter enforcement. „How would you promote the progress of science and creativity, as enumerated in the U.S. Constitution, by upholding and strengthening copyright law and preventing its diminishment?“ one question says.

Staðreyndin er hinsvegar sú að eftir því sem lög verða strangari, því fleiri verða glæpamenninir. Enda fjölgar glæpamönnum eftir því sem fleira er bannað. Hérna er frétt um það mál, Overly-broad copyright law has made USA a „nation of infringers“.
Smáís hérna á Íslandi er í samstarfi með MPA(A) og hefur málflutningur þeirra litast af viðhorfi MPA(A) og sést það bestur á skrifum þeirra sem þar sem þeir verða sér gjörsamlega til skammar með eintómum lygum og óþverraskap. Og hefur framkvæmdastjóri Smáís ekkert gefið eftir í þeim efnum heldur, eins og sést augljóslega á skrifum hans á Smáís vefnum (ath: Það hefur komið í ljós að Smáís hefur breytt greinum eftirá og jafnvel eytt þeim ef svo ber undir). Fyrir mitt leyti, þá hef ég enga ástæðu til þess að treysta fólki eða samtökum sem hafa uppi svona vinnubrögð og óþverraskap.
