Scaremongering against the EU and the Euro

I have noted a lot of scaremongering about the euro and the EU because of the Greek debt crises. Mostly because the anti-EU crowd has been having a field day with this debt crises in Greece and have been using the chance to predict a end to the euro and to the EU.

I don’t know what the anti-EU crowd is eating. But it must be something really bad because every time they eat it, out comes a lot of nonsense about the EU and the euro. I am one for sure that it is not healthy for anyone to be so self centred as the euro-sceptics are in reality.

There are news today that according to a pool done by TV2 in Denmark that majority is against the euro at current time. I find that interesting, as in Denmark they are paying higher intrest rates then nearby euro countries. Same actually goes for Sweden, but they are paying higher price then Finland that has the euro, but they are also having issues with the fluctuating exchange rate. Denmark is in ERM-II and has a fixed exchange rate with the euro.

According to the news yesterday, Estonia is going to join the Eurozone on the 1st January 2011 if everything works out for them without any problems. This is good news for them, as it is going to help them on there way out of the recession.

The recession is almost over in the world, lessons has been learned and are going to be learned in the coming years. I just hope that the world is a better place after this mess the mess this recession created in the world and in Europe.

Facebook doesn’t want you to speak about your privacy on Facebook

This is a quite interesting fact. But it seems that Facebook doesn’t seem to want you to speak about your privacy on Facebook. Specially on how to make your privacy settings stronger on Facebook. All such guides or help tips provided over Facebook gets automatically blocked by Facebook, both in Facebook Chat and in messages or by posting them on your wall. I have tested the message and the Facebook chat already. The message on the wall is based on those facts, but remains untested today by me.

I say that there is something is bad in Facebook headquarters and it needs investigating by the authorities, as it is not normal or legal to block people from increasing there privacy or give them tips about it with there friends on Facebook.

People can easily test the Facebook word block on privacy (it also blocks links in this regards it seems), just use privacy and some manner to relate that to Facebook and it’s lack of privacy controls or settings.

DMCA abuse on Youtube, Twitter and such

I am getting really annoyed by the hopeless legal system in the U.S. Specially since the legal system there allows for abuse when it comes to certain laws there. I am in this case speaking about DMCA laws. It is also interesting fact that the U.S wants to put this crap on the rest of the world with the ACTA agreement on copyright and piracy preventions, but they are currently pushing this trough WIPO that mandates that the member countries must take the agreement up as a law at some point in time.

When it comes to abuse the DMCA laws in the U.S are heavily used for censorship proposes, as the law require that the DMCA claim is acted on right away and does not allow for a buffer period to exist so the claims can be verified by the content holder or the person that the DMCA claim is used on. This loophole is used by both individuals, companies, religious groups and other how want to silence any and all how criticise them on any manner of subjects. It does not matter if the far use doctrine is in effect or not. The reason for this why this happens is also the fact that people, how are often the victims of this due not have the money or the resources to fight these false DMCA in court. They due file a counter claim, but in the case of Youtube account it does not help people, as in the end the Youtube account is banned according to Youtube rules. It does not matter if the DMCA claim has been counter-notified or not. Here is a good sample of that fact.

This DMCA abuse also extents to twitter, facebook and other sites today. Where some sick people have the need to silence criticism on there religion, crazy ideas and so on. Here is more reading material on the DMCA abuses and the effect that it has on the internet in the U.S and elsewhere in the world.

UK is free to leave EU

The ever eurosceptic UK is keen to blame all its problems on the EU. Rather then solving its own issues, on it’s own terms. This type of blame game is not only bad for the UK, but it is also bad for the EU as a whole. Both in the political sense of things, and in the spirit of common solutions that EU is build on.

So I have the following suggestion for the new government of UK, how is mostly likely is going to be Conservative Party government.

The suggestions is as follows.

Leave the EU. Do it, stop speaking about. Do what you have been treating for years now. It is your right according to the Lisbon Treaty to leave the EU. Nobody is stopping you now.

The reason why I suggest this is quite simple. I have grown tiered of the UK people complaining about EU and blaming EU for UK only problems. This complains has to stop, the best way for it to stop is for UK to leave the EU. I am sure that nobody is going to think badly of UK if it choose to re-apply for EU membership few years (10 or 20 years) after leaving the EU.

Happy Christmas to all my readers all over the world. I am off to christmas break until 28th December 2009, the only reason why I might write if there are earthquakes or volcano eruptions in Iceland or in the world during this time.

This is in Icelandic.

Lies of the Eurosceptics in Iceland

There are many things going on in Iceland at the moment. For instance, Eurosceptics are having a field day because of the the Icesave dispute.

In english writing, the Icelandic eurosceptics have been trying to convince* the world, and mostly Europe that the Icelandic people will not join the EU. Even in reality, they don’t have a slightest clue what is going to happen when the accession treaty is ready and has been publicised in Iceland for a debate and vote. The truth about the Icelandic people however, is that Icelanders are generally open to the idea and principals of the EU and European identity. However, since the bank crash last year, Icelanders are trying to re-identify them self and at the moment many of us in Iceland are not quite sure yet what steps we need to take. This will sort it self out in the end, but it is going to take at least one year until a new identify of the Icelandic people starts to emerge from the crash last year.

During this time there has been increased anti-EU climax in Iceland. This has mostly been because of blame shifting in Iceland. Mostly from Icesave dispute. But also because many Icelanders feel that they have been unfairly treated because of the bank crash. Specially due that fact that Landsbankinn assets got frozen in the UK due to Icesave. This has also been aggravated by special interest groups like InDefence, how appears to work independent on the surface. But on closer look due have deep political connects to Progressive Party and Independence Party. Mostly to due a work that the political parties them self cannot do in public. This has been coming clear since InDefence was spotted lying about the basic facts of the Icesave dispute.

The blame shifting in Iceland has gone to UK, Netherlands and EU. In many people minds here in Iceland it is there fault that Landsbankinn fell and the system collapsed in Iceland. But when in reality, the fault it self lies with the Icelandic people them self.

That is what the anti-EU group Heimssýn and other small anti-EU groups have been focusing there effort on this pasts weeks in order to build the anti-EU attitude in Iceland. For the time being, this has worked sadly. But hopefully people will start to see trough this deception and see the real facts about what happened, not some made up events that never did happen in reality.

There is also the factor that eurosceptis in Iceland lie about EU and it’s policies and how it works in general. There also the ridiculous claims that EU is going to take over Iceland fishing rights and other natural resources. This claims have been going around in Iceland for many years now. The IP has been big in this claims over the years, with Davíð Oddssons at the front of many of them. But IP youth movement has also been keeping this claims in the debate. They even made a video about it for the election in 2003, suggesting that fishermen from UK, Spain and other countries would fish in Iceland EEZ because of the EU entry. This was a lie, but it was portrayed as truth in Iceland and in the end, for some people it just became that.

* Hjörtur is a known Eurosceptic in Iceland. What he is less known for is the fact that in 2000 or 2001 is created a anti-immigration political party in Iceland. His party failed and he go over to the IP when his political party failed in 2003 or 2004. He writes his bullshit into Brussels Journal today, and has been at it for a long time now.

My attempts to answer him there has not worked, as my account seems to have been blocked, even if I never did post a single comment there. The idea that I got blocked is based on the fact that my email account that I used got red-flagged when I did try to send them a technical request on why I could not log on into my account at Brussels Journal. I did get the request trough, I hope that I get a good explanation on why I appear to have been blocked from the site, even if I did not do anything wrong.

Smear campaign against EU in Iceland

Over the past decade there has been numerous smear campaign against EU in Iceland. The biggest anti-EU group is a political party called Independence Party, but they have been the ruling government political party since 1992. The Progressive Party was for a long time anti-EU political party, but earlier this year it switched sides and did go pro-EU. But even so there are anti-EU forces working in that political party today. Other anti-EU groups are The Federation of Icelandic Fishing Vessel Owners (LÍÚ), The Farmers Associaton of Iceland (Bændasamtök Íslands) (Yes, there is a spelling error there. But it is a responsibility of FAI), in the last there is the cross-political movement called Heimssýn (contains xenophobic groups and other element of extremists), was created in 2002 by former leader of People’s Alliance. A man named Ragnar Arnalds, how has been opposing every major international treaty that Iceland has done since 1970. More specially the EFTA and EEA treaties that did help Iceland economic to move forward and modernize in due time since they became active. There are also some religious fundamental groups in Iceland that are against EU membership of Iceland.

Opposition to EU membership in the Icelandic government

It is just not the political opponents of the government that oppose the Iceland EU membership bid. But there also is the Left-Green Movement, that is currently in the government with Social Democratic Alliance. Within the LGM there is opposition to the Iceland EU membership bid. The reason for this is the fact that LGM is made up out of two to three groups from the old political landscape in Iceland (mostly from People’s Alliance defunct political party) . Most of these group that are in control of LGM today are from old political parties that deferred a international cooperation and economical inter-binding. Like the one that EU offers to it’s members nations. LGM is also made up radical left people how are part of anti-globalization movement, or have connection to them .In the general group of LGM members there is up to 40% support on average for EU membership. At the moment however, it is a bit smaller due to the next

Icesave and EU connection

All last summer the Icesave issue was on the mind of the Icelandic nation. The reason was quite simple, the government opposition blew the case out of all proportion. The anti-EU groups also used the Icesave debate to connect the Icesave directly to EU. Mainly because the nation that the Icesave debate was about are member nations of the EU (UK, Netherlands). This had a great negative effect on the EU debate in Iceland, as the anti-EU groups did successfully manage to connect Icesave directly to EU. Even if the fact remains that EU had little to due with Icesave directly. We have yet to see the end of that effect, in worst outcome it could bring down the EU accession agreement that comes after two to three years. However, I must point out that I find that outcome not likely to happen as the debate about EU becomes more informed and more facts surface, and less scare propaganda makes it to the EU debate.

For the love of the Króna

Many of the argument against the EU here in Iceland is that with joining the EU Iceland is going to face higher unemployment rate (the anti-EU people just love to ignore the fact that Iceland already has the EU laws regarding to the job market). But things are not as simple they seems. The anti-EU groups also claim that by joining the EU and start using the Euro the Icelandic people are going to face higher unemployment because then the government cannot deflate the Euro to make exports stronger and create more jobs that way. This augment is actually flawed, as by deflating ones currency creates more problems then it solves. It creates higher prices on imported foods and goods. But it also put the inflation and interest rates on a upward trend that is quite hard to solve in the long run. This off course are all problems that the Icelandic population has seen before and know all too well. But that does not stop the anti-EU groups making claims that the our small króna is going to save the day. Even if it created the problem in the first place.

Scaremongering about the EU

One of the most popular political tactics in the world is scaremongering, it is easy, it is cheap and you really don’t care about facts with you are scaring people brainless. This is what they do in the anti-EU groups here in Iceland. They claim the most crazy things about the EU. Here are few examples, EU is going to draft Icelanders into a EU army (that doesn’t exist), EU is going to take over Iceland natural resources, foreign fishing ships (Spain, UK, etc…) are going to all the fish around Iceland and sell it on there home market. The last one is the most popular one, it was even used in youth IP ad in 2003 (SUS) (you can find the ad on youtube) to scare people from voting pro-EU political party (SDA) at the time. The most scary thing is the fact that this actually worked in the election 2003 to some degree.

The man in the Morgunblaðið

The most unpopular man in Iceland, and one of the main leader of the anti-EU campign here in Iceland is Davíð Oddsson. The former PM, foreign minster and SÍ (Central Bank of Iceland) head. Up to around 1993 Davíð Oddsson was positive about Iceland joining the EU and to become full member. But after becoming fascinated with Thatcherism and Neoliberalism (or something of that sort) he did turn a against of the EU. With the result that EU was not debated to a serious degree while he was in office as PM and had some serious power in Iceland. The reason is for that is quite simple, Davíð and his party (IP) did effectively ban all debate about EU on the surface. Instead they did scare people with anti-EU ads and propaganda while they had some power in Iceland. In order to stop EU support in the media, groups connected to LÍÚ and Morgunblaðið placed Davíð as a main editor of Morgunblaðið few weeks ago. After Davíð took his office as main editor of Morgunblaðið it has become more anti-EU by the day, and in fact has started to show signs of Fox News style reporting in regards to the EU. However, the Morgunblaðið is possible facing bankruptcy as subscribers have fled the paper after Davíð became main editor of it.

What will the future hold

What is going to be the result out of Iceland EU accession bid no one can tell yet. But in my best hopes are that the Icelandic people pass the EU accession treaty when it is ready and properly announced in Iceland and properly debated. There are always those how are against change, that is just how the world works. We will see what happens, in good time.

Það hefur verið misskilningur í íslenskum fjölmiðlum undanfarið að Lisbon sáttmálin stofni embætti Forseta Evrópusambandsins. Þetta er rangt. The U.S is going backwards in the modern world

I am watching CNN and I am releasing that the U.S is going backwards in the modern world. Every year they go more religious, more fundamental in there made up believes (Christian and whatever). At the current pace, Europe (EU) is going to bypass U.S in terms of technology and as a world hub in the next 10 or 20 years.

This is truly a sad path for nation to take, due the end result of this. There is always hope that this progress reverses to the correct path. But that path is away from religion and spiritually and such time wasting nonsense. But only time is going to tell what path is going to be taken of the citizen of the U.S. At the moment, however, the outlook is not good.
